Canon S400 S410 S500 LCD Install Instructions

New Page 1

REPLACING THE LCD SCREEN ON A CANON S410 or S500

Tools: small Phillips screwdriver, tweezers, Exacto knife.

  1. Remove the battery and memory card, and set the Mode dial to Movie.  You need to remove virtually all the screws that hold the camera together.  There’s one hidden under the USB port cover. The card slot door and the hinge cover will fall off, just don’t lose the hinge pin.

  1. The LCD and the Backlight are clipped together by that metal frame, and the Backlight is attached to the camera with screws. You need to carefully separate the LCD and the Backlight by working the clips on the frame loose with your knife. (1) Be careful not to scratch the Backlight. Once the LCD is free from the Backlight, you will see that the orange flex ribbon cable from the LCD goes under the bottom of the camera and attaches to the circuit board just below the lens. You need to remove one screw from the plate on the bottom of the camera and raise the plate to free the flex. (2) If the whole thing pops off, don’t worry.

  1. To get to the LCD flex connection, you have to move a second smaller flex. Peel up the clear plastic and expose the connection for the smaller flex. Use your fingernail and flip open the black clamp. The end of the flex will pull right out. (3) Now locate the bigger connector for the LCD flex and free the flex the same way by flipping the blue clamp open. Remove the old flex and put the new one in the connector. Close the blue clamp, then put the smaller flex in the other connector and close the black clamp. Run the LCD flex under the bottom of the camera and replace the bottom plate. If you look at the flex that is attached to the bottom plate, it kind of looks like the side view of a flat bed truck. Just behind the cab, underneath the door and at the top of the windshield there are 3 small holes in the flex which go onto metal pins. (1) If you need to reattach that flex, be sure the pins are in the holes. All those raised contacts on that flex have to match up with the buttons on the back of your camera, so if that flex is not positioned correctly, the buttons won’t make contact.

  1. Be sure the back of the LCD and the front of the Backlight are dust free, then carefully snap the two back together. Put the cameras front cover on first. The hinge pin on the card door must be centered. Hold the door in the open position and set it down on the end of the camera so that the little wire end of the spring is inside the card slot, and pointing down. Keep some pressure on the door so the end of the spring stays in contact with the plastic. Slide the door backwards until the ends of the hinge pin go into the two grooves. You see why it has to be centered. Close the door and put the hinge cover plate on. Put the back of the camera on, replace the rest of the screws and various parts that may have fallen off and test the camera.

  1. If the screen is white or light grey and the Backlight is lit, the LCD flex may not be tight in the connector. Yes, you will have to open the camera up again, sorry.
